Para nós que trabalhamos com tratamento de água e efluentes, é muito comum ouvirmos a pergunta: “Essa água aqui, é boa pra beber?”
Também é muito comum, ouvirmos a resposta: “Ah, pode beber sim, essa água vem daquela mina ali atrás e é muito boa. Pode ficar tranqüilo”.
Na verdade, o que a pessoa está querendo saber é se a tal água pode ser ingerida sem causar-lhe nenhum dano à saúde. E, para tanto, não podem existir subjetivismos do tipo “água boa” ou “água ruim”. Existe sim, o conceito técnico e preciso de “água potável”.
Não basta olhar para uma água perfeitamente transparente e sem odor e dizer que ela é potável. Excesso de sais dissolvidos, metais pesados e vírus como da Hepatite não são visíveis e não têm cheiro.
É justamente para evitar avaliações subjetivas e equivocadas que existem as normas de qualidade e, no Brasil, a norma federal que determina o que é água potável é a Portaria 518, de 25 de Março de 2004, do Ministério da Saúde. Ela representa a última atualização de normas anteriores, cujo início foi o Art. 2.º do Decreto n.º 79.367, de 9 de março de 1977. Trata-se de uma regulação de alto nível que acompanha perfeitamente os padrões de qualidade internacional.
